The classic businessman of the beginning of American industrialization, James Brewster, already in 1810 founded a company for the production of crews and wagons. Later, wagons and other equipment for the railroads were included in the product mix.

With this assortment, the company, managed by the heirs of James Brewster, survived to the global economic crisis that erupted one hundred and twenty years later.

In order to enter new markets for itself in 1932, the company’s management founded the aircraft manufacturing division of Brewster Aeronautical Corporation.

The plans were to receive orders from the Department of the Navy, in which Brewster had some connections.

Brewster started small: supplies of floats for seaplanes and aircraft components of other aircraft manufacturers. Two years after the opening of its own design bureau, the company developed its own Brewster B-38.

The project was the company's response to the requirements of the US Navy for a modern two-seat single-engine monoplane designed to perform the functions of a scout (the so-called scout) and a deck dive bomber.
