Vickers Aircraft History

Some VICKERS Aircraft Pilot's Manuals PDF are above the page.

The history of the company began when engineer William Armstrong founded the company for the production of hydraulic mechanisms in 1847.

In 1882, the company merged with Charles Mitchell Shipbuilding Company and was named Sir WG Armstrong Mitchell & Company.

Only until 1907, 71 military ships were built at the plant, including many cruisers of the Japanese fleet that participated in the Russo-Japanese war.

The first cars were produced in 1902, and in 1912 an “air compartment” was created, which in 1920 became a branch of Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft.

In 1927, a division of business occurred. The arms business and shipyard in the Newcastle upon Tyne suburb on the Tyne River were bought by Vickers Limited, which changed its name to Vickers-Armstrongs. Aviation and automobile manufacturing formed separate companies.

Armstrong Whitworth founded the “Air Department” in 1912, which later became Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Company.

At the merger of Vickers and Armstrong Whitworth in 1927, Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft was acquired by J. D. Siddeley and became a separate independent enterprise.

In 1955, the company's shipbuilding division was named Vickers Armstrongs Shipbuilders, Ltd, and in 1968 the name was changed to Vickers Limited Shipbuilding Group.
