Vought Aircraft History

Some VOUGHT Aircraft Pilot's Manuals PDF are above the page.

In 1917, Chance Voughtt, former Wright Brothers chief engineer for the Wright Company, and his partner Birdseye Lewis set up an airplane company, calling it Lewis and Vought Corporation.

At first, the company was located in Astoria (New York), but in 1919 it moved to Long Island City.

In 1922, Lewis left the company and it was simply called Chance Vought Corporation.

In the interwar period and during WWII, starting in 1937, the corporation became a pioneer in the field of aircraft design for vertical and short take-off and landing, primarily for the needs of army tactical aviation to support the ground forces, as well as fleet carrier-based aircraft.

Some samples from the product line of this type: V-173 (1937-1942), XF5U-1 (1942-1945). SUVP and VTOL become the hallmark of the company, during the Cold War, it participates in almost all programs and projects of such aircraft for the army, aviation and navy.

In a difficult struggle with the giants of the aircraft industry, all of these projects sooner or later were closed under the pressure of the military and industrial lobby, "pushing" the traditional versions of aircraft.

The XC-142 (1959-1964) came closest to arming.
