Westland Aircraft is a British aircraft manufacturer based in Yeovil, Somerset. The company was created by division of Petters Ltd almost before the outbreak of WW2, Westland has been building aircraft since 1915.

During the war, the company created numerous unsuccessful designs, but their Lysander was successfully used as a Royal Air Force communications aircraft.

After the war, the company focused its efforts on helicopters and merged with several British firms to form the 1961 Westland Helicopters.

From 1959 to 1961, the British government forcibly merged 20 or more British aviation firms into three large contracting groups and government funding.

The British Aircraft Corporation and the Hawker Siddeley Group were responsible for the development and production of the aircraft, and the Bristol, Fairey and Saunders-Roe helicopter units (with an air cushion) were merged with Westland to form the Westland Helicopters in 1961.
