McDonnell-Douglas Corporation is the third largest aircraft manufacturing company.

The company has a special division - McDonnell-Douglas Airspace, dealing with defense orders.

The history of the division goes back to McDonnell Aircraft, founded in 1939 by James McDonnell.

The unit only fulfills orders from the US Department of Defense.

Founded in 1934 by Howard Hughes, the Hughes Helicopters division was acquired by McDonnell-Douglas Corporation in 1984.

Its products are military and civilian helicopters of a wide variety of applications. The division's main customers are NASA, the US Department of Defense and international commercial satellite manufacturers.

The laboratories of the subdivision have developed Delta II launch vehicles, the main systems of the future international station in near-earth orbit, and thermal vision systems.

The C-17 division, Long Beach, California, employs approximately 8,400 people and is developing the new C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft.

In addition, the unit developed the predecessors of the C-17 - Douglas C-74 Globemaster I and Douglas C-124 Globemaster II.

In 1996, the McDonnell-Douglas firm was taken over by the Boeing Corporation.
