One of the largest US aerospace firms headquartered in Burbank, California. One of the 100 largest industrial corporations in the United States.

Lockheed has 3 large branches and several subsidiaries in the United States, as well as branches in Canada, Australia, Switzerland and other countries. Its enterprises are located in 11 cities located in 5 US states.

Sales in 1981 exceeded $ 6.2 billion, and the number of employees amounted to 71.3 thousand people.

Lockheed produces military transport aircraft, ballistic missiles, communications satellites, electronic equipment and other military equipment, as well as technically sophisticated equipment.

Divisions Lockheed Firm founded in early 1916 as the Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Co. brothers Allan and Malcolm Loughead, in 1926 renamed Lockheed Aircraft Co.

In 1941 acquired Vega Aircraft Corporation (founded by her in 1937 as a subsidiary).

In the 20s it produces a number of passenger aircraft. On July 4, 1927, a streamlined five-seat Vega aircraft took off, designed by John C. Northrop with the participation of J.F. Valti.

In 1928-32, a number of long-distance flights were made on it, including round the world.

In 1931, a 5-seater Orion takes off with a retractable landing gear. Due to good aerodynamics, it overtook many fighters of that time.

The high-altitude version of the Lockheed 10 Electra light transport aircraft (1937), equipped with Pratt-Whitney XR-1340-43 turbocharged engines, was the first aircraft in the world with a fully pressurized cabin.

Since 1935 Lockheed also produces combat aircraft. During the years of the WW2, the corporation made a major leap, turning from a small enterprise into the largest Pentagon contractor.

At the end of 1936, only 1,200 people were employed in it, and by mid-1943 the number of employees reached 94 thousand people. From 1939 to 1945 she produced 19,273 aircrafts of various types.

Currently, Lockheed Martin together with Boeing are working on the creation of the 5th generation F-22 fighter, the promising JSF fighter (prototype X-35), the DarkStar unmanned reconnaissance prototype, the X-33 reusable single-stage spacecraft.
