Hawker Aircraft was a British aircraft manufacturer. The company was formed in 1920 to buy as much of the assets as possible from the bankrupt company Sopwith Aviation.
Among the founders was also Sopwith's founder Thomas Sopwith. The company's original name was H.G. Hawker Engineering, but it was changed in 1933 to Hawker Aircraft Limited.
The Great Depression in the early 1930s hit hard on many aircraft manufacturers, but Hawker's relatively strong finances enabled the Gloster Aircraft Company to be acquired in 1934.
The following year Hawker formed the Hawker Siddeley consortium together with Gloster, Armstrong Siddeley and Avro.
All companies included in the consortium continued to manufacture aircraft under their own brands until 1955 when, after pressure from the British government, Hawker Siddeley was converted into a single company.
Under the guidance of Hawker chief engineer Sydney Camm, Hawker designed and built several legendary aircraft, including Hawker Hart), Hawker Hurricane which played a crucial role during the Battle of Britain and Hawker Typhoon which played an important role during the invasion of Europe.
